<img src="http://kimharty.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/glasspheny-fabritoryinvite11.jpg" alt="glassphemy"

The Fabritory, a collaborative art project by Deborah Czeresko and Kim Harty, is an on-site glass blowing studio where the artists remelt, reconstruct and recycle broken bottle glass using their extensive knowledge of glass processes. The Fabritory is one part object fabrication and one part idea experimentation where the artists use sedimentary shards of glass from the GLASSPHEMY chamber as raw materials to create forms. The Fabritory’s objective is to take the model of industrial recycling and put it into a sculptural context, where the energy transfer necessary to recycle can be experienced by the viewer.

The sculptures produced in the Fabritory are a formal exploration defined by the limitations of the material: recycled bottle glass. The artist’s quest in the Fabritory is to exhaust the sculptural possibilities in an effort to discover form that is beautiful, useful or unique.

The raw energy used in breaking the bottles in the GLASSPHEMY chamber is a sharp contrast to the careful consideration in reconstructing them. By approaching broken bottles from a sculptural perspective the artists take the idea of recycling out of the box, and asks the viewers to reconsider their assumptions about what happens to their bottles are recycled.

All materials have an environmental consequences once they are discarded. While recycling is a strategy to lessen our environmental impact, it is not a process that we should take for granted. Compared to plastic, or cans lined with epoxy, glass has the lease toxic impact on our ecosystem and food, however, a massive amount of heat (upwards of 2000 degrees) is necessary to remake the raw materials into useful objects. Understanding the multifaceted nature of recycling means realizing that there is no “free lunch” when it comes to consumption. The Fabriotry exposes the fact that when glass contained are carted away they don’t just evaporate and begs consumer to weigh their actions in order to make more responsible choices.
Cirque De Verre uses the idea of “the circus” and superimposes it on the space of the “glass demonstration” as a nontraditional venue for performance art. The metaphor of the “circus,” is comical, but rather than being an ironic satire it is a whole hearted embrace of art as a spectacle and the artist as a performer. We break down the borders between art and entertainment and explore it as an inclusive endeavor. In a effort to make performance art accessible to the audience we unite the postmodern artistic sensibility with the circus, which Vladamir Lenin referred in in 1919 as” the people’s art form.”
In each panel there is a handmade vessel, which is not quite symmetrical. The silhouette of the vessel is projected onto the glass. Three of the window panel have been removed so that the viewer can see the glass object behind them. The materials in the installation reference the home, and question the objects that we interact with on a daily basis.
